Our tweens also love to sew, and love to make bags! Here is a simple bag that we made ! Have fun making bags with your tween, they love to have loads of them! And think of all of the skills that they will develop while doing it-skills that they will keep for a lifetime!
For this project you will need: 2 rectangles of fabric, 13 by 24 inches, or whatever size you prefer. This bag ends up to be about 12 inches wide by about 11 1/2 inches long
One piece is the outside, and one piece is the lining, which i suggest doing in denim because it is strong. You can also make the denim be the outer side and the lining be another fabric.
You also need 2 strips of the outer fabric, 3 inches wide by the length you want the straps to be plus 2 inches Our straps are 22 1/2 inches long , so we cut them 24 1/2 inches long. and 3 inches wide
If you want a zippered pocket you will need a 7 inch skirt zipper
Needles and thread, scissors

Fold your outer fabric, right sides together, to form a 13 by 12 rectangle. Pin along each side from the fold to the top . Sew a 1/2 inch seam along each pinned side. Turn right side out. Fold under the top edge 1/2 all around and pin in place.
Fold the straps right sides together lengthwise and pin all along the length. Sew the seams using a 1/2 inch seam. Then turn the straps right sides out. This is more easily accomplished if you attach a fairly large safety pin to one end, and push it inside the strap, slowly, the entire length of the strap, forcing the strap to turn right side out as you go.

If you want a zipper pocket, cut a piece of lining fabric about 9 by 8 or any size that you would like it to be. Fold under 1/2 inch along one 8 inch side. Place the fold on one side of the zipper and sew it to the zipper.
Take this piece of fabric and pin it to your lining so that the zipper side is 2 inches down from one 13 inch end, on the right side of the lining. Sew the other side of the zipper to the lining. Then fold under 1/2 inch all around your pocket piece and sew all 3 sides to the lining. And here is your zippered pocket!

Fold the lining into a rectangle 12 by 13. Pin along each side from the fold to the top and sew a seam on each side with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Along the top edge fold under 1/2 inch all around .Slip the lining into the outer bag, wrong sides together,. and pin the lining to the outer bag., matching side seams.
Measure in 2 inches towards the center-top of the bag from the side seams and slip the straps in between the lining and outer fabric at this point. Slip about 1 inch of the strap in so that it will be held firmly. Pin in place. Sew a seam right near the edge all around the top of the bag.
If you want you want to you can sew a few stitches about 1/2 lower than the top of the bag to hold the straps in place more securely.
And here we go! Our new bag, done by us, to our preferred size and fabric!
